Salary framework: 22 July 2025 · English change: 8 January 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The usual salary requirement is at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. Some applicants qualify under different salary rules, including certain healthcare and education roles.
A job must also be eligible. Medium-skilled occupations have restricted access, with listed occupations and transitional arrangements. A salary alone does not make a job eligible.
New applicants generally need B2 English. Some existing holders extending or updating permission remain under B1 arrangements. Nationality, qualifications and professional assessments can affect how English is proved.
Sources checked on 17 September 2026. Requirements can change after this review. The official rules and your individual circumstances determine eligibility.
The change concerns care workers and senior care workers, not every healthcare profession.
Effective: 22 July 2025By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
New overseas applications for care worker and senior care worker roles closed from 22 July 2025. Do not rely on an offer advertising a new overseas care-worker visa under these roles.
Some people already in the UK can extend, update or switch under specific conditions. Current guidance says a person switching from another visa into these care roles must have worked legally for their sponsor for at least three months.
Eligible doctors, nurses and other listed health professionals have separate job eligibility. The care-worker closure does not close the whole Health and Care Worker route.

Permission to travel depends on your nationality and existing UK status.
Enforcement: 25 February 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The UK began enforcing digital permission to travel for affected visitors from 25 February 2026. Eligible non-visa nationals need an ETA unless an exemption applies. Other travellers may need a visa or an existing valid immigration permission.
An ETA is permission to travel for eligible journeys. It is not a work visa and does not guarantee entry. Do not assume the same document applies to every passport.
If you hold an eVisa, keep the passport linked to your UKVI account up to date before travelling. Airlines need to be able to check your permission.

Two years for eligible applications in 2026; a shorter period from January 2027.
Future change: 1 January 2027By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The official Graduate visa guidance confirms two years of permission if you apply on or before 31 December 2026. Applications from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. PhD and other doctoral graduates continue to receive three years.
You must be in the UK, have the relevant Student permission, complete an eligible course and have completion reported by your education provider. Apply before your Student permission expires.
The Graduate visa cannot be extended. A later switch to another route depends on meeting that route’s requirements.

A taught master’s course does not automatically allow dependant visas.
Course-start rule: 1 January 2024By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
Student dependant eligibility is restricted. The guidance covers government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months and eligible full-time postgraduate students on courses lasting at least nine months.
For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course must be a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree. Most taught master’s students therefore cannot use this category to bring new dependants.
Eligible partners and children must also meet relationship and financial requirements. Existing family circumstances and extensions can involve additional rules.

The usual £29,000 requirement has exceptions and evidence rules.
Current guidance checked: 17 September 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
A partner or spouse application usually requires qualifying combined income of at least £29,000 a year. This is not a single rule for every family application.
Different arrangements can apply where the sponsoring partner receives specified disability or carer’s benefits, or where the applicant first applied as a partner before 11 April 2024 and is extending. Savings may be usable under the relevant rules.
The source of money matters. Being above the headline figure does not replace the need for the correct documents and qualifying evidence period.

A short family visit usually belongs under the visitor rules.
Current guidance checked: 17 September 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The Standard Visitor route covers tourism, visiting friends or family and other permitted activities. Visits are usually up to six months. Some specific purposes have different provisions.
You must meet the visitor requirements, including intending to leave after the visit and being able to support the trip. Your nationality determines whether you need a visa in advance, an ETA or neither.
A visitor cannot generally take a job in the UK or make the UK their main home through repeated visits. A parent visiting an adult child is different from applying to live permanently with family.

Renewal does not automatically mean you can use an interview waiver.
Effective: 1 October 2025By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
Most nonimmigrant applicants generally need an in-person interview, including children under 14 and adults over 79. The September 2025 update replaced the earlier July notice.
Limited exceptions include certain diplomatic or official cases and qualifying B visitor or H-2A renewals within 12 months of expiry. Renewal conditions include a previous full-validity visa issued when the applicant was at least 18.
Additional conditions apply, including where you apply and past refusals or ineligibility. A consular officer can still require an interview.

US visitor visas: prepare for a clear, consistent application
Start with your trip purpose, DS-160 and the embassy’s instructions.
Current guidance checked: 17 September 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
B visitor visas cover permitted business or tourism activities. They do not authorise ordinary employment in the United States. Your purpose must fit the visa category.
Follow the DS-160 application and appointment process. The official guide identifies the passport, application confirmation and other required items. Further evidence may be requested about your trip, funding and intention to leave.
Appointment availability differs by location. Published wait times are estimates, not a promise of an appointment or approval. Visa issuance and admission at the border are separate decisions.

Explain why this course makes sense for your education and circumstances.
Applications from: 23 March 2024By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The Genuine Student requirement replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant assessment for Student visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024. Earlier applications are assessed under the earlier requirement.
Study must be the primary reason for the application. The assessment considers your circumstances and whether your proposed education makes sense. Clear supporting evidence is more useful than a generic personal statement.
The department recognises that genuine students may later consider lawful migration pathways. That does not remove the need to satisfy the student requirements now.

Check the current subclass 482 route before using an old checklist.
Replacement: 7 December 2024By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The Skills in Demand visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024. Both are associated with subclass 482, so the subclass number alone does not tell you which requirements an old guide describes.
Use the current Home Affairs route page and occupation information when checking a sponsored role. An occupation appearing on a list is only one part of visa eligibility.
For an existing visa or a new application, use guidance that matches your circumstances and application date. Do not reuse old salary figures or assume an old employer checklist is still current.

The required sponsor income depends on the relationship to the visitor.
Announced: 29 September 2025 · Reflected in current service guidanceBy Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
ICP’s current visa service lists minimum monthly income of AED 4,000 for a resident sponsoring a first-degree relative, AED 8,000 for a second- or third-degree relative, and AED 15,000 for a friend.
The visitor’s relationship must be evidenced. The service also lists passport validity, health insurance and return-ticket requirements. Income alone does not guarantee approval.
These figures concern this resident-sponsored friend or relative visit category. They are not a universal income requirement for every UAE tourist or residence visa.

UAE Golden Visa: a residence route with category rules
Long-term residence is available only where the relevant criteria are met.
Current guidance checked: 17 September 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The UAE Golden Visa is a renewable long-term residence route, with five- or ten-year periods depending on the category. It is designed for eligible investors, talent and other listed groups.
Eligibility and evidence vary by category. A claim that everyone can obtain the same residence period or qualify through a single payment should be checked against the government requirements.
A Golden Visa is a residence permission. It should not be confused with a short tourist visa or a promise of citizenship.

Europe’s Entry/Exit System: what changed at the border?
Digital border records replace passport stamping for travellers in scope.
Full operation: 10 April 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The EU Entry/Exit System began its phased rollout on 12 October 2025 and reached full operation on 10 April 2026. It records entry and exit information for non-EU nationals travelling for short stays who fall within its scope.
Passport data and biometric information are recorded. Border procedures can therefore look different from a previous holiday, especially at a first registration.
EES is a border registration system. It is not a visa application, and it does not replace a Schengen visa where you need one.

ETIAS: do not confuse it with an active visa requirement
The EU’s official notice says applications are not being collected yet.
Status checked: 17 September 2026By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
The official ETIAS notice says the system is not currently operating and applications are not being collected. Do not treat a future authorisation system as something you must buy today.
ETIAS and EES are different systems. EES concerns border entry and exit registration. ETIAS is a separate travel-authorisation programme.
If you need a Schengen visa, follow the visa process. Do not assume a future ETIAS authorisation will replace that requirement. Check the official EU page again close to your travel date because launch arrangements can change.

Canada Express Entry: job offers no longer add CRS points
The removal of points does not remove every job-offer requirement.
Effective: 25 March 2025By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
Canada removed job-offer points from the Comprehensive Ranking System for current and future Express Entry candidates from 25 March 2025. This removed the previous additional 50 or 200 points.
A job offer can still matter for eligibility under particular immigration programmes. The change is about ranking points, not a statement that job offers are irrelevant to every route.
Meeting a programme’s minimum requirements and receiving an invitation are separate steps. An old score estimate that includes job-offer points may no longer be useful.

New Zealand visits: when overseas remote work is allowed
You can keep in touch with overseas work, within the visitor conditions.
Visitor applications from: 27 January 2025By Foreign Visa · Reviewed 17 September 2026
What this means
Visitor visas applied for from 27 January 2025 allow remote work for an overseas employer or client. The announcement also covers people entering with an NZeTA under the new conditions.
This does not allow work for a New Zealand employer, services for New Zealand customers, or work that requires being physically present at a New Zealand workplace.
Your visit must still meet visitor requirements. Permission to work remotely does not settle tax questions or create an unlimited right to remain.
